There are some old houses in Tuxtepec that have survived the time. These “casonas” are characterized by having a corridor outside with several columns to what is known as the portal. This type of architecture is typical in the “Cuenca del Papaloapan” region and the best example is found in Tlacotalpan, a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO.

Some of these casonas in Tuxtepec are used as houses, others have been adapted for commercial purposes and others have been adapted as hotels.

The best example of this type of architecture is undoubtedly the city hall that you will find in the Plaza Juárez. It has more than 30 portals in the front and a few others on the sides.
